The legal position in Australia

Under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001, online casino-style games, including online pokies, cannot legally be provided to people in Australia. The Australian Communications and Media Authority enforces the law and regularly asks internet providers to block illegal gambling websites. Scamwatch also warns about fake gambling sites, fake bonus credits and offers that are designed to take deposits.

Licensed Australian online wagering (sports and race betting) is a separate category. See the ACMA guidance on online gambling for the current rules.

Offshore sites are not covered by Australian consumer protections. If a dispute arises over a withdrawal or a closed account, you may have little or no recourse.

If you are considering any online option

Work through these checks before you deposit a cent:

  • Who operates the site, and which regulator, if any, licenses it?
  • What are the full bonus terms: wagering requirement, maximum cashout, expiry and excluded games?
  • What identity checks are required before a withdrawal, and how long do withdrawals take?
  • Can you set deposit limits, time limits and cooling-off periods yourself?
  • Is there a clear way to close your account and exclude yourself?

Why the venue's limits help

Closing time, the trip home and other people nearby all act as brakes. Online play removes them, which is why counsellors often see faster losses with phone-based gambling. Whatever you choose, set a budget you can afford to lose, set a time limit, and never gamble to win back losses.
